AMTA is Top Choice Among Massage Organizations

Image
According to Zogby Analytics , a firm that conducts independent, third-party research, “the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) continues to be the #1 choice for adults, who have had a massage in the past year, as well as massage professionals in terms of awareness, overall impression, credibility, respect and having the best trained and educated therapists.” On topics such as respectability, credibility, trust and networking, AMTA is better perceived than any massage organization, by large margins, both among consumers and therapists. Zogby conducted two online surveys in September–October 2018. One was to determine how both massage therapy organizations and large companies who employ massage therapists were viewed by adult consumers and the other to gather the opinions of massage therapy professionals. This was the third year Zogby Analytics conducted their surveys, and AMTA continues to be the top choice, by a large margin, over any other massage organization or company....

Finger Reset After Dislocation

Image
3 Weeks after a DIP Dislocation in a gymnastics injury, swelling, pain, and weakness remained in the PIP more than DIP of that digit. She was unable to grip or hang/swing on bars without pain. In order to restore threat free grip, compression plus lateral rotation held enabled full pain free passive end range flexion of the PIP. For the DIP, which was also limited in flexion, end range repeated extension restored pain free flexion. Just a little experimentation and you can easily find desensitizing repeated loading strategies. She was prescribed to do these resets hourly and gradually work on grip strength. Stroke Following Cupping Therapy AND a Massage? WHAT?!

Image
Historically speaking, most practitioners in medicine attribute cervical artery dissection (potentially lead to stroke) to  manipulation  of the cervical spine–especially from the chiropractic profession.  Several come to my mind including Grant 1987/88, Drueger & Okazaki 1980, Terrett 1987, Hurwitz 1996. This was echoed through the years from emergency medicine physicians in case reports, case series and case control studies but in the last decade, our knowledge on this phenomenon has changed our perspective of the cause. We now know from the works of many authors, but especially the case-crossover design work of  Cassidy in 2008  and reflected again in  2017 ; that  most likely  a patient is arriving to your clinic with a  stroke in progress.   Briefly speaking, the practitioner must have felt the symptoms were musculoskeletal in nature, but instead, were of vascular nocioception and the headache/dizziness/etc was the sy...

#MMTTV Q&A: Repeated Loading Strategies and Peripheralization: Go or No?

Image
Repeated loading strategies work very well for patient self treatment, and especially for centralization of radiating or radicular symptoms. The Stop Light rule says that peripheralization during a repeated loading movement is ok, as long as the Sx do not remain worse. Remaining worse means the Sx remain increased distally, compared to prior to starting the loading strategy (or any treatment for that matter). A review of the Stop Light Rule - which you should be using for any treatement or loading strategy is here . In this video, I am doing a Q&A at a Live Modern Manual Therapy Seminar. The student asked about peripheralization/pain during spinal repeated loading, in this case, unilateral loading, shift correction in standing. The full lumbar mini case video, over 40 minutes split into 2 parts will be on MMT Premium next week, subscribe now to see how I problem solved this chronic "SIJ" condition.
