I don’t think these will come as any surprise to people, but they are often overlooked by clinicians (especially those who work in really busy clinics) and they can play an important role in a session. Other Factors I Consider I don’t think these will come as any surprise to people, but they are often overlooked by clinicians (especially those who work in really busy clinics) and they can play an important role in a session.  I’m sure there are other factors that I think about but these are the ones that came to mind: Mood - if someone is just having a bad day, you probably don’t want to add more challenging exercises or increase the intensity of exercises General health - are they a little under the weather, did they have a bad night’s sleep, etc. - these all get factored into my thoughts Stress - is the person always stressed out, then you’ll probably have to progress things slower because their body just won’t be able to adapt as well Vacation/special event ...

Optimizing the Effectiveness of Preoperative Education Part 1

Image
Optimizing the Effectiveness of Preoperative Education Part 1 Dr. Luke Pedersen, PT, DPT, CSCS It seems logical that preoperative education (PE) can have numerous benefits for patients and healthcare providers, and in many instances, it has been accepted as a vital part of clinical best practice. Yet, when you analyze the research, it becomes clear that these benefits are not definitive. There is no consensus in the literature regarding the benefits, or lack thereof, of PE. Part of the problem is the heterogeneity of the PE provided. Differences include what information is provided, how it’s provided, when it’s provided, and who provides it. Additionally, patients receiving different surgeries or procedures and different patient populations require different types of PE and will be impacted differently by the education they receive.  Current trends in healthcare emphasize quality care that is appropriate and effective. It also emphasizes care that is efficient and focuses...

New Florida Law Requires Public Education on Massage for Pain

Image
Florida just took a major step forward with recognizing massage as an accepted approach to pain management. The state passed a new law that requires the Department of Health to develop and publish an online educational pamphlet on the use of non-opioid alternatives for pain, including massage therapy.  The publication will need to include information about the advantages of each non-opioid approach, with references on its efficacy.  The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) applauds the foresight of this legislature which will make a difference in how the residents of Florida view their options for pain care and management, with a clear endorsement of massage therapy.   Learn more about the new Florida law » AMTA continues to engage with health organizations, and federal and state agencies to discuss how the latest science supports massage therapy an alternative to opioids for pain management.  Find out how AMTA is advancing the conversation...

When Do I Start Marketing My Cash Practice?

Image
I get this question so often: “When is it the right time to start marketing my cash practice?” In today’s short video, I explain the answer. Here’s the deal: don’t wait until your whole practice is set up to start marketing. It’s not about going out and running all the big advertisements or billboards. When you first start, it’s about letting people know you have a business. Go create a Facebook page, go out into the community—tell people you can help them. You need to give people hints along the way as you build your business. You want to start getting people on your email list and build the buzz. By starting some simple marketing before your business is set up, you’re creating anticipation. You’re also creating accountability. You’re making your business real, and when it’s real, you’ll follow through. When there is a chance you can let others down, you’ll be way less likely to give up. So, the best time to start marketing is today. It’s not your opening day; it’s RIGHT N...
