Why Do Some BPPV Patients Require More Repositioning?

Image
Treatment of BPPV can be one of the most rewarding procedures in the field of physical therapy — both for the patient but also the clinician!  There are not many instances in our profession that we can make life changing results in just  one  visit! When the diagnosis of posterior canal BPPV (most common canal involved) is made through history taking and clinical examination, the application of canalith repositioning procedure can be effectively performed with success rate as high as 80%.  However, for some individuals,  repeated  manuevers are necessary to achieve results. The question is,  why? This has been studied over the years with  conflicting  results over factors including: Age Which canal is involved Duration of symptoms Intensity of symptoms and Comorbidities (diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, etc) For most vestibular therapists, the application of  two  canalith repositioning manuevers are performed...

What Would You Rather Hear?

Image
I've been listening to podcasts and reading books on how to communicate better. It's a fasciating topic that you don't really think of as a clinician. There are researchers who actually look at the best ways of presenting new research or information to the general public. Here's a simple slideshow based on what we as clinicians commonly say, versus statements that are more likely to connect with a patients or make them more at ease with you as a medical professional. What would you rather hear? by Erson Religioso III Check out The Eclectic Approach to Modern Patient Education to learn how to connect with and educate patients on all the important topics you don't learn in school or traditional seminars. Optimizing the Effectiveness of Preoperative Education Part 3

Image
This post continues the Pre-Op Education Series by Dr. Luke Pederson, DPT. To catch up, check out Part 1 and Part 2 . Pain Science Education Although some studies show that PE results in reduced post-op pain levels, especially in the acute stages (1, 17, 25, 28, 29), there are also many studies that show no change in post-op pain levels with the addition of PE (1, 3, 4, 9, 11, 30). There are also some studies that show no change in post-op pain levels but do show a decrease in the use of pain medications post-op (9, 12, 26). According to Doering et al. (2000), this is possibly due to the fact that patients who receive PE have a better idea of what to expect and anticipate post-op pain and experiences. This, in turn, leads to better self-efficacy and the ability to better cope with post-op pain (9). A number of studies also note the limited impact of PE delivery on pain levels may be due to a lack of pain-specific education and overemphasis on pathoanatomy, biomedical models, a...

Money Is Not Your Most Valuable Asset

Image
Did you know money is not your most valuable asset? In today’s post, I wanted to share how important something else is... Everyone thinks money is so valuable, but in reality, it’s what you do with the money that’s valuable. Maybe a vacation with your family, or a donation to charity—both of those are examples of ways money can be an asset. However, it’s still not your most valuable one. Your most valuable asset is how you leverage your time. Money comes and goes. It always leaves. But time? If you can figure out how to leverage your time properly, it will always be there. The number one mistake I see practice owners making is doing everything themselves. They mismanage their time in that way. In the beginning, sure, you’ve got plenty of time. But once you’re busy, you have to do everything yourself. Cleaning the clinic, answering the phones, setting up emails, designing a website—the list goes on. If you’re totally overwhelmed with tasks that aren’t in your “zone of genius...
