Top 5 Fridays! 5 Facts About Exercise Induced Hypoalgesia

Image
EIH has been widely studied in both pain free individuals and persons with persistent pain showing both short term effects initially after one exercise session, with other evidence suggesting longer term higher pain thresholds after consistent activity. 5 Facts About Exercise Induced Hypoalgesia by Cameron Faller Certain central mechanisms exist with the belief that exercise is able to decrease pain by reducing temporal summation and improving conditioned pain modulation. To provide better application in understanding its effect with different contexts, here are 5 known facts that as of date the research supports. 👉Exercise Does Not Need To Be Specific - EIH is able to be reproducible with aerobic, isometric, and dynamic types of exercise. 👉Intensity and Duration are Dependent on Type of Exercise - Pain free individuals experienced greater EIH with the higher intensity in aerobic exercise. How Common Is Cervical Vertigo in an ENT Office?

Image
The prevalence of Cervical Vertigo can depend on many factors.  One of the major factors that determine prevalence is if a study looks at this diagnosis as a  single or double entity . This basically differentiates if the origin of dizziness is Single entity:   solely  from cervical origin Or if the origin is a  double entity  — meaning the cervical spine is a  component  of the symptoms but the patient  also has  dysfunction of the peripheral (i.e. BPPV) or central (i.e. concussion) system. Read a previous blog that we wrote in this topic  here  and specifically for  concussion here. We also find that the prevalence of Cervical Vertigo is different between different professions.  What do we mean by this?  Simply put…if you are a rehabilitation professional (i.e. osteopath, chiropractor, physical therapist), then you have the  capability and skills to intervene to the cervical spine   more tha...

🧱 Strength development in the core and trunk muscles is a vital component within a well-rounded strength and conditioning program. A physioball can be a valuable tool to use when attempting to develop a strong core. ⠀ 🔑One primary function of the spine is to prevent motion in a stabilizing effort. One example of this can be seen in the anti-extension pattern where the spine and core muscles are attempting to avoid extending and arching of the low/mid back. 🎯Anti-extension is one of many core strength patterns to train, but it's certainly an important one. Below is a series of progressions you can use for anti-extension core strength training with a physioball. ⠀ 🔥Progression series: ⠀ 1. Physioball Stir the Pot ⠀ 2. Physioball Push-Pull ⠀ 3. Sports Physical Therapy and Nutrition

Image
Sports Nutrition One of the hottest terms in the last decade: sports nutrition. Ask any exercise scientists, personal trainer, or athletic trainer, and they will say that sports nutrition has become a booming topic of interest and a huge market. Physios may be behind the curve a bit on this topic, so we thought we'd offer a nice review of sports nutrition specific to sports physical therapy practice. For PTs, the 3 main areas of sports nutrition we should be focused on would include: Recovery Immunonutrition Performance enhancement Let's dive into each of these and see what PTs need to consider from a dietary perspective. Recovery Helping athletes rehabilitate after an injury is an important role of a sports physio -- but what about recovering from resistance training, practice, or competition? Recovering from training and competition can translate into athletes gaining more strength, playing better, and maybe even preventing injuries. PTs can help their athletes...

Do You Own a Business and Hate Selling?

Image
As a physical therapist, you HAVE to get over your issue with sales. And here’s how. People are getting crushed right now. The pandemic has caused so many business owners to give up, but you can’t let yourself join them. How do you keep going? Get over selling. If you don’t like sales and want to make sure the right people come into your clinic, you need the Ultimate Application Funnel. Essentially, it’s an application form that qualifies potential patients for you. The basis of it is this: If you can get patients in who already want to see you, sales becomes a lot easier. Originally, we had a self-scheduling system for people in our clinic. They could put themselves on my schedule without speaking to us first. But then, they’d end up upset at the cost because I didn’t do the sales process correctly. They’d also spend the entire appointment telling me their story, so I wouldn’t even get a chance to see them move. It was getting frustrating and time-consuming, and I knew I ...

Top 5 Fridays! 5 Types of Fallacies You Should Be Aware Of Part 2

Image
Last week, the topic of logical fallacies was introduced with 5 common errors that occur with clinical reasoning and deductive thinking. This week, 5 more fallacies are presented that you will often see writers or readers intentionally or unintentionally perform with citing research. 5 Types of Fallacies to be Aware of by Cameron Faller 👉Begging the Question - This fallacy occurs when an argument's premises assume the truth instead of supporting it. This in turn creates circular reasoning as the argument is used to support the conclusion. 👉Correlation/Causation - This is one of the most common fallacies noted in randomized controlled trials. Just because something is highly correlated, doesn't mean that one causes the other. If this were the case, then one could argue that when Nicolas Cage stars in a film causes more people to drown in pools. (https://www.statsmedic.com/correlation-does-not-mean-causation) 👉Anecdotal Evidence - In place of highly driven evi...
