Evidenced Based Medicine: Is it Working in Tendinopathy?

Image
Hi all, Apologies for my silence over the last couple months. I fell off the wagon as family and research took over. I missed one and then it was so easy to miss another and another. But the blog is back (subscribe  here ) and what I plan now is shorter pieces to showcase interesting new research and a longer blog every now and then. Part of the reason for the absence is that I am very excited to announce that the Mastering Lower Limb Tendinopathy Course is now fully online and will be launched in the next few weeks. Please stay tuned. Hope you enjoy the blog this week, an example of evidence based medicine, or perhaps lack off, in tendinopathy. See you next time Peter    Evidence based medicine: is it working in tendinopathy? This will highlight an example of evidence based medicine and how we should reserve excitement in science before we have multiple studies and sufficient evidence. Evidence based medicine includes three steps 1) knowing all the evidence; ...

#MMTTV Q&A: Everything is Better Except Chronic Numbness

Image
Ben, a MMT Blog reader recently asked... I have a patient who has a 30 Hx of low back pain, Diagnosed with the usual DDD, lumbago. She has pain in her low back and bilateral hips that centralizes with press ups in the sagittal plane, back pain has been overall improved. She has bilateral numbness in the 4th and 5th toes, not quite an S1 dermatome but maybe?? sometimes in L4 over the big toe of the L foot. This numbness has not improved with any interventions. We have tried hips offset in both directions which improves one side and worsens the numbness in the opposite foot. We went this route because she is restricted in L side glides. Motor function wise she in unable to perform a bird dog without wt. shifting, bulges her abdomen with a functional curl up, and is shaky and fatigued in modified side plank - used the stuart Mcgill 3 for a screen We have talked a fair bit about avoiding flexion, learning how to squat better, lift, sit with lumbar support, body mechanics cha...

Why I Run

Image
Why I Run this post was first found on Specialist Pain Physio Recently I was chatting to a good friend who asked me why I run. I had to pause and think because naturally I don’t class myself as a runner. Instead, I am someone who goes running. Whether I am a runner or not is not particularly important, however the purpose is. I used to go out regularly just to keep fit. 30-40 minutes would suffice, I would feel pretty good afterwards, but it was often a bind beforehand. Then the Royal Parks 1/2 Marathon 2016 was on the agenda so I had to get a bit more serious. Somehow it became more enjoyable. There was a goal and a reason. The reason was to raise awareness of the problem of chronic pain and to raise money for UP,  understand pain . Purpose and mine as an example Having a purpose or a meaning is known to be a key ingredient for a healthy and happy life. You may or may not know what it is, so it’s a great idea to write it out. We all have a calling, or as Seth Godin says, a...
