Top Nutrition Apps for Physical Therapists

Image
Physical therapists (PTs) are stepping up their game and focusing on important in the clients' lives: social determinants of health (SDOH), wellness, alcohol and drug use, sleep, and nutrition. As we venture into a newer world of PT practice, clinicians need to be armed with useful tools and resources to help them along the way. Let's outline some of our team's favorite nutrition apps that have helped us help many clients. Nutrition Guide for Clinicians Published by the well-known Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians is a simple app that all Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) should have installed on their phones. The app allows a clinician to easily look up a condition or diagnosis, and then scroll through easily summarized data on simple nutrition tips that can contribute or treat the disease. Authors of the app list copious studies in their references for PTs to research later.  The best part of this app: it...

Top 5 Fridays! 5 Mechanisms of Manual Therapy vs 5 Myths

Image
5 Mechanisms of Manual Therapy vs 5 Myths  Manual therapy is an umbrella term encompassing a variety of “hands-on” techniques utilized by many different professions. Hundreds of different certifications/courses exist that incorporate some form of performing these passive interventions with the mindset that these techniques are specific and will “fix” someone’s pain. 5 Mechanisms of Manual Therapy by Cameron Faller Given the lack of long term success with only transient changes, many clinicians have challenged the beliefs of the narrative behind what manual therapy can actually do. Research has never supported the theories that joints can be put back into place, that muscles can be released or lengthened, or that even clinicians have the reliability of detecting certain faults/detecting the tissue “causing” someone’s symptoms. Instead, research supports that manual therapy with the right contextual factors has a significant neurophysiological response to potentiall...

The Problem with Traditional Physical Therapy Conferences

Image
As physical therapists, it’s our job to rise above the noise and become influencers in our communities.   I thought that by going to typical physical therapy conferences, I could get closer to that goal. I did what everyone told me: marketed to physicians, took out print ads, sponsored the local football stadium, etc. But it didn’t work.     Patients pay their physician a copay, so why would they pay me (the “technician”) more?  When I was trying to rely on the marketing strategies above, that’s the patient mindset I ran into a lot.  Have you ever had a patient who was prescribed PT three days a week for 12 weeks, but you determined you only needed to see them once a week to get the desired result? What that tells you is this: because you’re just the “technician,” you don’t get to be the decision-maker. If we rely on marketing to physicians, we become technicians instead of the Doctors we are.  Overall, I never found a PT conference where I...

Top 5 Fridays! Develop Power with These 5 Band Resisted Jump Exercises

Image
💥 Band Resisted Jumps 🧨 ⠀ 🎇 Building force production capabilities and the ability to express power are true staples of athleticism. Jumping, whether in the squat position or split squat position, is a key movement skill necessary to excel in athletics. ⠀ 🧠Learning how to jump and land is one thing. However, learning how to jump continuously in short bouts allows you to build a rhythm for better sequencing and coordination. Athletes need to be reactive to do well in sports, so this is a way to add a base layer to that skill. ⠀ 🎯After the base layer has been developed, we can then appropriately dose in reactive jumps to aid in the ability of the athlete to react and produce force. Implementing reactive jumps allows for you as the coach to see how smoothly your athletes can produce a single bout of force at game speed. ⠀ 🔑The addition of the band is another way to overload the system and challenge the athlete with resistance against their jumps. Start with bodyweigh...
