Amazing Breathing Assessment - Outtake!

Image
This video is from a recent MMT Live seminar in Little Rock, AR. Normally to demonstrate my pain free take on "trigger point" work with a mobility ball, I place a ball under a tender point and have the participant work on diaphragmatic breathing. The long, slow exhale tunes down the nervous system and reduces tenderness to the point where you no longer feel the ball. It works great!๐Ÿ‘ Until you forget about it during the rib mobility assessment portion!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚We all had a good laugh about my little flub including Cody, who was a great sport about it! Vestibular Nucleus: The Eye of the Hurricane

Image
Regular practice of exercises that connect the mind and body, such as Tai Chi and Yoga, aid in teaching you how to focus.  In our modern world, this means mindfulness. A key phrase that is often taught for focus is, Move from the eye of the hurricane and not be swept away in the surrounding confusion So, how does this relate to Cervicogenic Dizziness?! This reminds me of an ever-so-important “eye” of the surrounding storm in the complicated and perplexing area of  dizziness, lightheadiness and vertigo ==>>the vestibular nuclei. The  vestibular nuclei  are important centers of integration, receiving input from the vestibular nuclei of the opposite side, as well as from the cerebellum and the visual and somatic sensory systems  (Purves et al 2001) . Neurons in the vestibular nucleus, which receive direct inputs from the  vestibular afferents, ocular afferents, cervical afferents  and several other locations as shown in diagra...

Top 5 Fridays! 5 Common Oculomotor Issues Post Concussion

Image
Another awesome infographic via Dr. Molly Parker, DPT ๐Ÿค“Oculomotor issues can occur post-concussion.  BUT what does that even mean and why is it important? Well, oculomotor means relating to movement of the eyes.  Basically, can the eyes move properly and together? . ๐Ÿ‘€This is important because oculomotor control is needed in tasks of daily living requiring vision. Think reading, writing, driving, moving through a crowd, screen time, or watching a sporting event. Even being able to sit down to a meal and look down at your plate and up to the person you're speaking to requires oculomotor control. . ๐Ÿ‘SYMPTOMS may include but are not limited to: •Blurred vision •Double vision •Eye fatigue •Headaches •Pain with visual scanning •Words moving on page •Loss of place with reading •Difficulty sustaining attention •Light sensitivity •Nausea •Dizziness Good news is that this is TREATABLE. . ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝ‍⚕️Mild difficulties, (EXCLUDING double/blurred vision, misali...

Massage Therapy Can Be Important for Cancer Patients

Image
Recent research compiled by the American Massage Therapy Association  on massage therapy for cancer patients continues to indicate its value for easing pain, reducing nausea, and preventing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. I t is also recommended or supported for consideration by the American College of Physicians, The Joint Commission and the Federation of State Medical Boards. A recently-published study showed significant prevention of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer patients for those receiving massage therapy. 1 The success continued through a 12-week assessment. Another study indicated massage and inhaled aromatherapy significantly lowered chemotherapy-induced acute nausea and vomiting among breast cancer patients. 2 “Research on the value and efficacy of massage therapy for many of the issues related to cancer and its treatments continues to evolve,” says Christopher Deery, President of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA...

Don't Lose Touch!

Image
Don’t lose touch This post was first found on Specialist Pain Physio's blog Touch is the perfected sense that plays a unique role in generating and maintaining the sense of self. In short, as humans we need touch. Yet in modern society we are losing touch with touch. We touch the world, the world touches us. We gather sensory information, we shape ourselves, we develop as babies and youngsters and we are connected through touch. Without touch, the world and the sense of self would not exist in a healthy way. A few months ago I orchestrated a touch experience at the DisruptHR Edinburgh ( click here  for my actual DisruptHR talk about the cost of pain to your business) that was duly taken up by most in the room.  Katrina  was watching (and touching). She asked if I would to do something similar at  DisruptHR London . That was last Tuesday. And touch we did! Some people engaged with great style and panache, whilst a few were awkward–the variation I expected. The...

Top 5 Fridays! 5 Roles of the Hamstrings with Running

Image
The infographic and post were originally found on Brad Beer's instagram! ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปDespite the growing awareness of the benefits of strength training for runners, one of the common oversights I observe in gym programs for runners is the absence or reduced focus on developing strength of the hamstrings ๐Ÿ‘€ _ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปOur hamstrings play a role in generating force and stabilising/controlling our body when we run ๐Ÿƒ‍♀️ _ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปMany people mistakenly believe that hamstrings are not involved with endurance running but more so with sprinting. In actuality a runner’s hamstrings have several key functions during running irrespective of speed ⬆️➡️⬇️ _ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThe ‘general roles’ of the hamstrings when running are to both extend the hip (such as when pushing off) and flex (bend) our knee. An interesting note is that despite popular opinion the hamstrings do not play any role in bending (flexing) the knee and bringing the heel close to the bottom during the swing phase of running ๐Ÿšซ _ ☝๐ŸปSpe...

You Need to Know This Before Starting Your Business...

Image
Today, I wanted to let you in on what you need to know before you go start your physical therapy business. Perfection is a business killer. Look, perfection is what got you through PT school. It’s what helped you get the credentials after your name. But, it will kill your business faster than anything. It keeps you from launching your website or marketing campaign. It keeps you from going downtown and getting the licenses that you need to open your business. 80% is good enough and will get you there. People don’t care about your credentials. I really don’t care about all the letters after your name. Patients don’t care either. Most of the time, they don’t understand what they mean anyway. What matters more is how you can help them. You need to get into your perfect patient’s head. Instead of worrying about your credentials, worry about what your patient is thinking. If you can get into their head, your marketing messages and website will ring so much truer. There’s ...
